Did you know that 70% of commercial honey is adulterated with corn syrup or sugar water? Here is how to make sure you are eating the real liquid gold.
1. The Thumb Test
Put a small drop of honey on your thumb.
- Pure Honey: Stays thick and intact. It won't spill or spread quickly.
- Fake Honey: Spreads and spills around like water because of high moisture content.
2. The Water Test
Fill a glass with water and add one tablespoon of honey.
- Pure Honey: Settles at the bottom of the glass as a lump or stream. It requires stirring to dissolve.
- Fake Honey: Dissolves immediately into the water.
3. The Heat/Flame Test
(Be careful with this one!) Dip a matchstick in honey and try to light it.
- Pure Honey: The matchstick will light easily because pure honey is flammable.
- Fake Honey: It won't light up because the high moisture/water content dampens the match.
